Democratic Candidate Andrews Out-Raises GOP Candidate in Republican Stronghold

ST. JOSEPH, MI — Democratic candidate for state rep in the 79th, Joey Andrews, announced today that he has nearly four times as much cash-on-hand than his GOP opponent, and he out-raised the GOP campaign during the last filing period. Just thirty-six hours before the deadline, his supporters raised more than $8,000 through a social media push alone. Since the primary, 147 individuals have donated to his campaign compared to roughly 80 individuals for the GOP opponent, and collectively Andrews’ supporters raised more than $27,000, approximately $8k more than their GOP opponent.

“The enormous grassroots support I’ve earned in my community is extremely encouraging. I will continue to fight for better wages, criminal justice reform, teacher pensions, and clean energy investments in our community,” said Joey Andrews. “I thank these working families for their commitment and their sacrifice in helping us get a progressive voice to Lansing on behalf of the 79th for the first time in a generation. Even lifelong Republicans have joined our campaign to make their discontent with the status quo quite clear. Representatives who are beholden to wealthy donors and special interests are not fit to lead this district. Our community cannot rely on them to protect our families. Unlike what we have seen in the past, this campaign believes in unity, and I am honored to be a part of this fight for change.”

After winning the Democratic primary and running an intense general election campaign with a strong voter outreach program, Joey Andrews plans to win this election. If it was not clear before that a Democrat can win this district in November, this financial disclosure makes it clear who the voters support. So far 295 of individuals have contributed to his campaign –more than any other campaign in the 79th –and their momentum is only growing.

“More than ever before, people are demanding that their representatives work for them and their community – not Lansing insiders. People are tired of politicians who buy their seats and special interests who buy their votes. With this campaign, we have demonstrated they want a change, and with such generous financial support and community involvement in my campaign, we will finally have our voices heard in Lansing!”

Andrews was born and raised in St. Joseph where he graduated Lake Michigan Catholic High School before earning degrees in history and music from Carson-Newman University in Tennessee. He went on to earn his law degree from Wayne State University Law School in Detroit. In 2015 he co-founded Parasol Solar, LLC and since then, has become an advocate for solar energy and environmental causes in the area.
